Warning of ‘bogus cops’ charging to return stolen cars in north of Pretoria

“They must stop depositing money to unknown people who claim to have recovered their vehicles.”

Residents who have had their vehicles stolen are once again being warned by police to be vigilant of “bogus cops” who want to con them out of their money.

According to the Pretoria North police, the perpetrators contact victims under the guise of assisting them to retrieve their vehicles.

“Motorists whose vehicles have been stolen should know that no police officer will request them to pay any amount of money for their vehicle to be recovered,” spokesperson Sergeant Tsakani Miyen said.

She said a number of people came forward to report that they paid money to people claiming to be police officers in the belief that their vehicles had been recovered.

“The victims are told the money had to be paid to recover the vehicle and have it returned to its rightful owner.

“There’s no money that they need to pay – the victim must come with the vehicle’s documents and their ID to claim the vehicle,” Miyen said.
