WATCH: Bad weather en route as hailstorm hits Pietermaritzburg, Richards Bay

Residents have shared videos and photos of the unprecedented hailstorm on social media.

The thunder has started rumbling in Empangeni as bad weather makes its way up the north coast, having swept over the southern regions.

As at 13:00 today a bad thunderstorm with hail was reported from the Pietermaritzburg area, leaving the city and surrounds looking as if snow had fallen.

Residents in Richards Bay reported a hailstorm shortly thereafter.

Strong winds were also reported, making driving dangerous, especially considering the wet roads.

The SA Weather Service issued level 2 alerts for severe thunderstorms for the South and North Coast and parts of inland KwaZulu-Natal.
