Watch: Calls for Ekurhuleni mayor to step down lead to council brawl
A motion by ActionSA got the EFF hot under the collar, leading to a physical brawl inside the council chambers.
A physical fight between Ekurhuleni councillors saw the removal of EFF members from council chambers by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department yesterday.
Councillors took a vote on whether to proceed with the meeting in the absence of EFF representatives. The call saw 113 councillors vote in support of the meeting’s continuation.
This was after the meeting erupted in chaos and later violence as ActionSA tabled a motion for a vote of no confidence in mayor Sivuyile Ngodwana.
The ANC and DA stood in support of such a motion with recommended amendments submitted by party leaders.
Soon after these were tabled before council, the EFF ordered ActionSA to withdraw its motion.
Disagreements soon resulted in physical attacks which resulted in the removal of the EFF from council chambers.
The speaker of council also left the council chambers.
After councillors voted in support of continuing with the meeting without the EFF, party leaders met with legal representatives to ensure a continuation will hold legal grounds.
The meeting adjourned at 20:30 as a meeting for 11:00 was scheduled with the speaker of council for today.
