Watch: Cape Town driver allegedly speeds off without paying for fuel

A petrol attendant chased a fleeing driver after alleged fuel theft near Gatesville.

As South Africans struggle with rising fuel costs, one motorist allegedly thought it fit to drive off without paying the bill at a petrol station in Cape Town.

In a video posted on crime activist Yusuf Abramjee’s Facebook page, a black Ford Fiesta can be seen parked at a petrol pump at the station near Gatesville in the Athlone area.

The time and date stamp on the video indicate that the incident occurred at around 15:30 yesterday (May 3).

A petrol attendant can be seen filling up the tank and, once done, removing the pump from the vehicle and closing the fuel cap.

As he walks around the car with a card machine for payment, the motorist speeds off.

The petrol attendant runs after the vehicle, appearing to pick up a rock. According to Abramjee’s post, the motorist put in R800 worth of fuel, and the attendant allegedly smashed the car’s back window as the driver sped away.

The owner of the petrol station confirmed the incident took place and said he would get back to Caxton Network with further comments, which will be added once received.

The Western Cape police could not provide further information without the case number.
