Watch: Central University of Technology students ‘shut down’ campus in Free State
A student who spoke to the media on condition of anonymity explained that students have not received their full allowances for accredited and non-accredited student accommodation.
Students of the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) have embarked on a campus “shut down” this morning. They say they have been raising the same concerns since January 2020 but to no avail, Bloemfontein Courant reports.
A student who spoke to the media on condition of anonymity explained that students have not received their full allowances for accredited and non-accredited student accommodation.
She said they are not asking the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Henk De Jager, to address them, but rather to release the rest of their funds as most of them have only received R750. This, she said, is perceived by the students as a slap in their faces.
She added that some students have been forced to sleep in the streets, computer labs and other venues. According to her their frustrations also include the fact that the institution does not keep students in the loop with developments on campus.
The media attempted to get a comment from the CUT management, but the communications department could not be reached.
