Watch: Magical moments as Comrades 2022 kicks off

Comrades 2022 is the first since the Covid-19 pandemic.

The long wait is finally over. The first Comrades Marathon in two years kicked off on a high note on Sunday morning.

Pietermaritzburg streets were flooded with thousands of athletes from around the world.

Msunduzi municipality mayor, Mzimkhulu Thebolla, Deputy mayor, Mxolisi Mkhize and Comrades chairperson, Mqondisi Ngcobo were amongst the dignitaries that came to give the runners a send-off.

Hundreds of spectators braved the cold morning to show support and to cheer on the runners.

One of the spectators, Zinhle Meyiwa, said that she was there to support her father.

“My dad loves the Comrades, and I’ve lost count of how many races he has done so far, however we always come to support him and to cheer him on. It has been like that since I was little,” said Meyiwa.

She added that they will be seconding the race and following behind.

The annual Comrades Marathon was at a halt for 2 years after Covid19 invaded the country.
