Watch: Cricket’s first red card

The Caribbean Premier League introduced the red card rule as punishment for teams that slow down over rates.

Sunil Narine became the first cricketer to be sent off the field, during a Caribbean Premier League (CPL) match.

The card was given to the Trinbago Knight Riders at the start of the 20th over of the St Kitts Nevis and Patriots’ innings, which meant Trinbago captain Kieron Pollard had to select a player to leave the field.

As a result, his team fielded with just 10 men during the last over, with only six fielders allowed inside the circle.

St Kitts took full advantage, scoring 18 runs.

The CPL introduced the red card rule in a bid to combat slow over rates.
