WATCH: Durban man sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for gender activist’s murder
The accused admitted during the cross-examination that he intended on killing Lindokuhle Cele.
A Durban man was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for the brutal murder of well-known musician and LGBTI activist, Lindokuhle Cele.
The 23-year-old Umlazi resident was stabbed three times by the accused, Mvuyisi Noguda, during the attack in February 2020.
The Cele family, who gathered at the Durban Magistrate’s Court today for the sentencing, said they have finally received closure now that justice has been served.
Speaking about the case, Acting Judge Narini Hiralall, said, “The accused, Mvuyisi Noguda, claimed the deceased raped him but he didn’t report the incident to the police station because he thought it would be embarrassing for him. He said when he saw Cele a month later, he got angry and stabbed him.”
The accused admitted during the cross-examination that when he attacked Cele, he intended on killing him.
The deceased was described as a loving person, who was well-loved by his family.
The Cele family spokesperson and Lindokuhle’s aunt, Nombuso Cele, thanked everyone for their support and prayers and political parties for always checking on them.
“On behalf of the Cele family we are happy that at last, justice has been served. It has been a long journey but with God, we persevered. Some people would have quit right now, but the love that my family have for each other kept us going. Twenty-five years in prison will not bring my son back but it should set an example to the murderers out there. At least our family has found closure,” said Cele.
