Some schools have had to close as the eThekwini Municipality employees’ strike has negatively affected learning.

Today Ward 97 councillor André Beetge visited Sewula Primary School in eZimangweni outside Amanzimtoti, which has had to close because of having no electricity. Lower Illovo Primary also closed earlier this week because of sewage outfall which put the learners’ lives at risk. No city employees have been available to attend to these issues.

Burning barricades were also seen at Wanda Cele Road near Southgate, as well as in KwaMakhutha this morning as disgruntled residents demanded water and electricity be restored. Some of these communities have had no services for the past three weeks.

The Witness reports the municipality has served 79 employees with notices of misconduct for engaging in the illegal strike that left the city swamped with rubbish.

The employees, from different departments, face various charges in relation to their participation in the unlawful industrial action which started on February 27.
