Watch: Fiji knock Blitzboks out of Hong Kong cup race

The Springbok Sevens side will hope to end in fifth place after being knocked out of the running to win the Hong Kong leg of the series.

Fiji scored the only try of the second half to snatch a hard-fought victory over the Blitzboks in the Hong Kong Sevens cup quarter-finals later today.

The Fijians claimed a 10-7 win over the Springbok Sevens after trailing early on in the match.

This came after Shaun Williams gave the Blitzboks the lead with the first try of the match. Fiji hit back through Iowane Teba and threatened to score again just before the break, but South Africa held on to take a 7-5 lead into half time.

The second half saw the Blitzboks hold out against waves of Fijian attack, but the Pacific Islanders eventually broke through for their second try, which also wasn’t converted. That missed conversion gave South Africa hope, but even though they threw everything at their opponents, they could not find the crucial score.

The result sends the Springbok Sevens side into the fifth-place semi-finals, where they will face the USA at 08:20.
