Watch: Former Kempton Park hairdresser pleads guilty to murder
A murder accused admitted in court that she intentionally killed a man by tying him up and suffocating him with a plastic bag.
The murder trial of a former Kempton Park hairdresser continued yesterday, when she appeared briefly in the Kempton Park Regional Court to enter a guilty plea.
Kempton Express reports that Denise Hattingh’s lawyer, Obed Lewete, read her plea to the court, confirming that she pleaded guilty to murder under Section 51(2) of the Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1977.
According to the plea, on May 15, 2024, at a property on West Road, Pomona, Hattingh unlawfully and intentionally killed Jacobus Marthinus Greeff, a 30-year-old male, by tying his hands and feet with an electrical cable, and placing a plastic bag in his mouth, preventing him from breathing.
The cause of death was confirmed as applied pressure to the neck, consistent with ligature strangulation.
Hattingh admitted that she had no consent or justification for killing Greeff and acknowledged that the chain of custody of the body from the crime scene to the forensic laboratory in Germiston was not disputed.
Greeff’s body was examined by Dr M Nkosi, forensic pathologist, on May 16, 2024, who confirmed the cause of death. These findings were admitted as exhibits in court.
In her plea, Hattingh said that she and Greeff knew each other and sometimes shared a room.
On the day of the incident, she stated that the deceased sought sexual intercourse, and during the encounter, she tied his hands and feet with an electrical cable and placed a plastic bag over his mouth, leading to his suffocation.
She admitted that she foresaw that her actions would result in his death.
Hattingh further acknowledged that her conduct was unlawful, wrongful and punishable by law, and that she had no lawful justification for her actions.
The case was postponed to November 4 for the preparation of a pre-sentence report.
