WATCH: Helicopter crashes into uMngeni River, occupants dead
The pilot and co-pilot, aged between 30 and 40 years, were declared dead at the scene.
Two people died after a helicopter crashed into the uMgeni River, Durban at about 8.30am today (3 May).
According to Netcare 911 spokesperson, Shawn Herbst, the pilot and co-pilot, aged between 30 and 40 years, were declared dead at the scene.
“When emergency personnel arrived on scene, they found the helicopter to be covered in thick reeds, partially submerged in the water,” he said.
The cause of the crash is believed to have been a bird strike.
“It is speculation at the moment. The relevant authorities will conduct the necessary investigations,” said Kyle van Reenen of Emer-G-Med.
Several ambulance services are on scene including Metro Police Search and Rescue and the SAPS.
Technicians are attempting to reach the scene below the north bound lane of the N2 before the Inanda Road off-ramp.
Motorists are urged to avoid the area.
