Michael Cairns said he wanted to give back to fellow community members amidst the violent protests, unrest and looting experienced across the province.
An attempt by La Lucia resident, Michael Cairns to lift the spirit of his fellow patrollers keeping watch over the community has gone viral.
The 34-year-old, who is one of the volunteers manning entry points into north Durban, was captured by a fellow patroller on video playing a medley of tunes including Scotland the Brave on Wednesday evening.
In a video on Twitter and shared in the hundreds and viewed more than 1 000 times on Facebook, Cairns said he wanted to give back to fellow community members amidst the violent protests, unrest and looting experienced across the province.

“I’ve been part of the community watch over the past few nights and everyone has pulled together to protect the area and the shops which has been amazing. I just wanted to lift the spirits and lighten the mood amidst this chaos and share my gift. I played a medley including Scotland the Brave and I had no idea I was being filmed. Another resident by the name of Dale came up to me and told me he captured me playing.
“Within minutes of sharing it on social media platforms including Facebook, there were messages from far away as New Zealand sharing and commenting because the video had gone viral. I even got a call from a Scottish newspaper that interviewed me. I’ve been blown away by the heartwarming messages from everyone who has seen it. It has been overwhelmingly positive and I think I was able to bring some light in the darkness,” he said.
Cairns is part of the Durban Caledonian Society Pipe Band or Durban Callies.
