WATCH: Matric learner shot dead during Meerensee protest

The crowd swelled on Dune Road where the mourning relatives of the deceased teen were being supported by outraged community members.

An already enflamed situation was aggravated this morning (Monday July 12) when a grade-12 learner was reportedly shot dead by police during protests by a group attempting to march from Mzingazi to Meerensee.

At one stage the crowd had advanced almost to the Marlin Mall area but was forced back by a small police contingent that was assisted by CPF members and private security companies.

The Zululand Observer was present at the sad scene, waiting for the arrival of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), who will investigate the incident.

At least six bullet casings were found on the ground, including rubber bullet shells. Angry Current residents condemned the use of ultimate force against an unarmed young protester, and demanded that the responsible SAPS shooter be arrested and charged.
