Watch: Orcas spotted off Richards Bay

Killer whales, caught on camera, were reportedly hunting dolphins in the warm Indian Ocean.

Richards Bay resident Gert le Roux sent Zululand Observer super footage of orcas in the vicinity of 5 Mile Beach on Monday.

Without a prevalence of great white sharks to hunt in the warm Indian Ocean as they do in the Western Cape, the killer whales were reportedly hunting dolphins.

Earlier in the day, Zululand Observer consultant editor Dave Savides filmed a pod of bottlenose and humpback dolphins from the dolphin viewing platform at Alkantstrand.

These apex predators have been seen off the Zululand coast over the years, with confirmed sightings off Richards Bay, St Lucia and Cape Vidal in recent years.

Last week an orca calf was seen off Ballito.
