WATCH: President Ramaphosa’s Freedom Day address

President Cyril Ramaphosa will lead the 2021 National Freedom Day celebrations in Botshabelo in the Free State today (Tuesday).

This year, South Africa celebrates Freedom Day under the theme, ‘The year of Charlotte Maxeke: The meaning of freedom under Covid-19’. Maxeke is often honoured as the ‘Mother of Black Freedom in South Africa’ for her acts of defiance against apartheid, as well as standing up for women’s rights.

Today marks 27 years since South Africa held its first democratic elections, which gave the majority of its people their first taste of political freedom.

The Freedom Day programme will begin with the opening of the Charlotte Maxeke Treatment Centre in Botshabelo, after which Ramaphosa is expected to address the nation at 11:50am. The official programme starts at 11am, with other speakers leading up to the keynote address.
