Watch: Traffic officers attacked in Mpumalanga

Two vehicles of traffic officers were set alight during an attack near Evander.

Traffic officers conducting a roadblock between Evander and eMbalenhle in Mpumalanga were attacked and their cars set alight on Friday morning.

Traffic officials from the Mpumalanga provincial traffic department stopped taxis at Walker Park Golf Club on the R546 as well as on the road between eMbalenhle and Secunda.  This caused quite a traffic jam.

It is alleged that a group, believed to be taxi drivers, attacked the traffic officers at Walker Park at about 09:00.

The officers were overpowered and their weapons were allegedly taken.  The windows of two traffic vehicles were shattered and two traffic vehicles were set alight.

Some officers escaped and alerted the police.  Firefighters extinguished the burning vehicles.
