West Rand residents urged to stay vigilant amid kidnapping surge

Kidnappings remain more common in Pretoria, but a recent rise in incidents in Johannesburg’s West Rand has residents urged to stay alert and take precautions.

Although kidnapping incidents are currently more prevalent in Pretoria, residents across Johannesburg, including the West Rand, are urged not to assume they are safe.

Krugersdorp News reports that security company Fidelity ADT has alerted residents in The Orchards to a concerning rise in kidnapping incidents over recent weeks, warning that similar crime patterns can spread rapidly between areas.

“According to information received, these incidents appear to involve suspects following residents home late at night, between 22:00 and midnight, abducting them, and then demanding ransom from their families,” said Charnel Hattingh, the head of marketing and communications at Fidelity ADT.

“At this stage, the incidents do not appear to be targeting specific individuals, which suggests that opportunistic crime may be at play,” she added.

Investigations underway

Hattingh explained that investigations are ongoing, but early indicators show criminals exploiting moments of vulnerability — particularly when residents are travelling at night.

“While these incidents are currently concentrated in Pretoria, it does not mean that other parts of Gauteng are immune. Criminals adapt quickly, and similar tactics have been seen spreading to new areas.”

She urged residents across the province to remain vigilant and take proactive safety precautions.

How to stay safe if you suspect you are being followed:

  • Stay alert at all times and avoid distractions such as cellphones or attending to children while driving
  • Regularly check your rear-view mirror and surroundings, especially when stopped at robots or stop streets
  • Be aware that more than one vehicle may be involved – suspects may rotate to avoid detection
  • A vehicle may pass you several times, change lanes, then fall back unexpectedly
  • Keep emergency numbers easily accessible and call immediately if you feel unsafe
  • If possible, alert someone you trust and provide as much information as you can – ask them to contact SAPS on 10111
  • Remain as calm as possible and stay focused on reaching a safe location
  • Slow down while continuing to move – this can make it harder for suspects to follow
  • Turn down the radio to remain fully aware of your surroundings
  • Switch on bright headlights and hazard lights to attract attention
  • Do not go home – avoid revealing where you live
  • Head to a busy, well-lit area such as a 24-hour garage, hospital or police station where surveillance cameras may be present

Fidelity ADT confirmed that it is working closely with affected communities and continues to monitor the situation. Increased patrols and visibility have been implemented in high-risk areas where possible.

“We cannot overstate the importance of community awareness. Immediate reporting and collective vigilance play a critical role in preventing crime,” Hattingh said.

Residents with any information related to these incidents are urged to contact the police or their private security provider immediately.
