What did you watch on YouTube this year?

From shorts about cracking an egg underwater to dancing in shorts – here are the most viewed videos of the year.

Since its inception in May 2005, the online video-sharing and social media platform YouTube has grown in leaps and bounds – and streams.

YouTube recently included YouTube Shorts as another way to attract video viewers. The short-form video format cannot exceed 60 seconds in length. As a result, and due to the popularity of this version of video viewing, YouTube has for the first time released the top-shorts list as part of its yearly wrap-up.

There were huge moments captured and discussed (in the form of YouTube creators reacting to big moments) throughout the year, but what did Mzansi watch this year?

Top trending videos

Was this the slap of the century or, in Chris Rock’s words, ’the greatest night of television history’? The moment at the Oscars trumped all other videos to claim the top-trending video for South Africans. The video had racked up over 103 million views by the start of December and is sure to be watched over and over in the years to come.

Shangerdanger’s video of cracking an egg open at 13.7m (45ft) underwater, which was only posted 10 months ago, had been viewed over 250 million times by December 2. The ‘eggsperiment’ has more than 100 million views than the next video on the list.

Top music videos

Mzansi loves their amapiano, as evidenced by the most watched/listened to music videos of the year. Wanitwa Mos and Master KG’s Dali Nguwe grabbed the top spot with over 21 million views in the eight months since it was posted. One of their other songs (Sofa Silahlane) also made it onto the top five list.
