A police officer accused of soliciting a R1 000 bribe from a suspect has appeared in court and was released pending investigation.

A White River SAPS officer accused of soliciting a R1 000 bribe was granted R2 000 bail when he appeared in the White River Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Mpumalanga News reports the case against Sergeant Xolani Sibiya (41) was postponed to November 26 for further investigation.

Sibiya was arrested on Thursday by the Nelspruit-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation and Serious Corruption Investigation units.

He allegedly solicited a R1 000 bribe from a theft suspect in exchange for assistance with a case. The suspect had been arrested on September 26 and later released on warning.

The court ordered Sibiya not to contact any witnesses, either directly or via a third party.
