Woman and baby killed by lightning

A woman and a baby boy were killed during a severe thunder storm, while a number of others were injured, in the Nqutu area in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday.

During the storm, Paramedics from KZN Emergency Medical Services responded to several incidents in the Mphondi area near Nqutu, Nothern KZN Courier reported.

In the first case, a woman, a 12-year-old boy and a five-year-old girl were seriously injured.

Later in the evening, a woman and a baby boy sustained fatal injuries after being struck by lightning, while a man and his four-year-old daughter were also injured.

The paramedics later transported the surviving patients to a nearby hospital.

“In both cases, it is not known how close the lightning strikes were to the affected patients,” said Robert McKenzie, EMRS spokesperson.

In a similar incident, one person was killed and three others injured when they were struck by lightning in Bloemfontein earlier this year.

The four were struck while at a camp site near Tierpoort dam and were later taken to hospital.

“Paramedics discovered one of the patients had been fatally wounded, while the other three had sustained injuries ranging from moderate to critical, including severe burns,” ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said.
