Woman charged with concealment of birth, may change to murder pending investigation
The woman was arrested after the baby’s burnt body was found on a dumping site in Katlehong.
While on patrol in the Mofokeng Section, in Katlehong, recently, officers from the Katlehong Police Station made a gruesome discovery, Kathorus Mail reports.
“Officers were told by residents that a baby had been dumped at a dumping site in the area.
“It is believed the baby was stillborn and, therefore, was dead when it was dumped,” explained Capt Mega Ndobe, Katlehong police’s corporate communications official.
When police arrived on the scene they discovered the body and noticed the baby had been burnt.
A case of concealment of birth was opened by the Katlehong police.
A 31-year-old woman has since been arrested, following a tip-off from the community.
“The suspect was charged with concealment of birth, but this charge could be changed to one of murder as the baby was found burnt,” Ndobe said.
The woman was released from police custody on bail, and she is expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court again soon.
“Police are still investigating the crime,” said Ndobe.
