Women warned against Vanderbijl ‘tombstone rapist’

It is believed that he disguises himself as a woman and targets women who visit the Vanderbijlpark cemetery alone.

Police are warning about a possible serial rapist at the Vanderbiljpark cemetery in Gauteng, after three incidents of rape with the same modus operandi, where women were raped on top of tombstones, have been reported.

Captain Fikile Funda of the Vanderbijlpark police says the man disguises himself as a woman and targets women who are alone and either visiting the cemetery or simply passing through.

According to information from the police, the man wears a dress and a weave when he approaches his victims. He then threatens and rapes them at knifepoint.

Funda says the first victim was at the graveyard to visit her mother’s grave.

“She was due for an interview and she had to go and appease, unfortunately she was approached by the serial rapist who threatened her with a knife. She was raped on the tombstone of her mother,” he says.

In another incident, it is suspected the same man attacked and raped a woman who was passing through the cemetery coming from college.

“The modus operandi used in the second and third rapes were the same. We urge anyone with information to contact us on 016 450 2262/3 or the investigating officer on 016 450 2555,” Funda says.
