Another young mother and her child have been tragically killed, allegedly by a loved one.

According to an article published by The Witness, a 21-year-old Kranskop, KZN, woman and her three-year-old child were fatally stabbed last Friday, allegedly by the woman’s boyfriend and father of the child.

The man later attempted to take his own life but survived and is in hospital under police guard.

Umzinyathi District police spokesperson Constable Siyabonga Nkwanyana says the suspect forced his way into the woman’s home by breaking down a locked door.

“The suspect allegedly stabbed the woman and their three-year-old child before inflicting injuries on himself.

“Tragically, the child died at the scene, and the mother succumbed to her injuries on the way to hospital. The suspect is receiving medical care under police guard at KwaMaphumulo Hospital,” says Nkwanyana.

Umzinyathi district commissioner Major General Francis Slambert condemned the brutal act.

“It is devastating to witness such a senseless and cruel act of violence. We extend our deepest condolences to the family.

“The SAPS Umzinyathi District remains committed to addressing and combating all forms of gender-based violence,” says Slambert.

“Investigations into this matter are ongoing. We urge anyone with additional information to come forward and assist in ensuring justice is served.”

This case is the latest in a spate of killings of women and children by their partners, who often take their own lives afterwards.

Last week, 21-year-old Bongeka Makhathini and her three-year-old son Okuhle were killed by her boyfriend, Mlondi Cele, on the South Coast. Bongeka’s body was found in the bedroom, while her son was found metres away. Both had their throats slit.

Cele was later found hanging in the lounge of an RDP house in Danganya, uMgababa.

This murder followed the death of Nontobeko Cele, also from the South Coast, who was killed by her boyfriend, Sibusiso Lawrence.

Lawrence filmed his murder confession on social media before taking his own life.
