Delta 4X4 turns the Golf into an off-road beast
If Volkswagen doesn’t want to revive the Golf Country of yore in the midst of an SUV craze, Delta 4X4 will! The tuner plans on creating an off-road monster with the Golf 8 R.
Taking it back to the early 1990s, Volkswagen had the adventurous idea to take their peppy little Golf Mk2 and prepare it for off the beaten path. Less than 10 000 were made, but it clearly left its mark, and now Delta 4×4 wants to do the same with the current model.
The key modification made by the Delta 4×4 is an 80 mm lift kit, resulting in an impressive ground clearance that surpasses that of most SUVs. While the lifted suspension may compromise the Golf R’s handling capabilities, it grants the hatchback the ability to conquer various types of terrain.
It’s worth noting that no performance upgrades have been mentioned, so the Golf R likely retains its standard 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, generating 235kW of power and 400N.m of torque.
To complement its off-road prowess, the reimagined Golf Country features 18-inch Hanma wheels wrapped in all-terrain tyres. The widened tracks are covered by vented fender add-ons, while additional enhancements include five PIAA LEDs mounted on the bonnet and a sturdy metal roof rack capable of carrying various gear, including a full-size spare wheel.
The rest of the Golf R’s bodywork, including its aggressive aerodynamics, remains unchanged.

At present, the reimagined Golf Country is purely a digital concept. However, Delta 4×4 has expressed its willingness to produce a limited run of 25 units if there is sufficient interest.
Interested buyers would need to budget approximately €35k (around R703 427) in addition to the cost of the Golf R donor vehicle and expect a labour-intensive conversion process lasting between six and nine months.
