Proactive protection: safeguarding yourself before and during your drive

With a rise in hijackings, it is crucial to be prepared and vigilant on the road. Wahl Bartmann, the CEO of Fidelity Services Group, provides insights on staying safe during your journey.

Recent crime statistics reveal that 5 488 car hijackings occurred between April and June of this year, underscoring the importance of heightened awareness and preparedness for potential incidents on the road.

October is dedicated to transport, it is an opportune time to refocus on safety. Maintaining constant vigilance is imperative. Wahl Bartmann, the CEO of Fidelity Services Group, offers advice on proactive safety measures.

“Turn off your radio, put your phone aside, instruct children to remain quiet and focus on your surroundings while driving. If you notice anything suspicious, report it promptly to your security provider or the SAPS,” Bartmann advises.

In the unfortunate event of a hijacking, Bartmann stresses the golden rule, “Do not provoke the hijackers. Demonstrate that you are not a threat.”

He recommends raising your arms to show you are unarmed and willing to cooperate. Use your left arm to release your seatbelt and shift your car into neutral, avoiding turning off the engine. Exit the vehicle slowly, positioning your body sideways to avoid direct confrontation with firearms. Shield your head with your arms and refrain from direct eye contact with the hijackers. Instead, try to note their attire, voices, and any distinctive features for potential later assistance by the police. Remaining calm is paramount.

Bartmann also suggests reconsidering your vehicle’s telematics system. “Evaluate if it still meets your needs, similar to how you would upgrade your cellphone. Consider switching to a more advanced tracking product.”

In a rapidly evolving technological landscape, newer and more efficient products and services emerge continuously.

“Your vehicle tracking system can make a life-or-death difference. Recent GPS advancements offer increased precision in geospatial information, communicated through enhanced communication technology,” Bartmann explains. “The latest hardware and firmware combinations allow for more frequent and cost-effective data transmission.”

Real-time location accuracy enables swift emergency responses, particularly in situations where every second counts, such as accidents. Bartmann advises engaging with your telematics service provider to assess if your current system provides the level of protection and monitoring that ensures your comfort and security.
