Confirmed for South Africa in 2024, Leapmotor has officially launched its local operations, introducing its first local model, the C10 REEV (range-extended electric vehicle).

The C10 measures 4 739mm in length and 1 900mm in width — dimensions comparable to that of the BYD Sealion 6. The C10’s wheelbase spans 2 825mm, and ground clearance is rated at 180mm. According to the company, the boot serves up 435 litres of packing space, expanding to 1 410 litres for utility use.

Powertrain and performance

The C10 REEV’s rear-mounted electric motor is supplemented by a 63kW/125Nm 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine, which acts as a generator (similar to the BMW i3 REx) to power the permanent synchronous unit — the latter fed by a 28.4kWh lithium-iron phosphate battery pack.

The total system output is 158kW and 320Nm of torque, delivered to the road via the rear wheels. Leapmotor claims the C10 completes the 0–100km/h sprint in 8.5s and reaches a top speed of 170km/h. Combined fuel consumption and operating range are quoted at 0.9L/100km and 970km, respectively.

Charging capability

Leapmotor says the battery can accept up to 65kW at a DC fast-charging facility, allowing a claimed 30–80% recharge in 18 minutes. AC charging from 30–80% and 5–100% takes three and six hours, respectively.

Pricing and warranty

The two-strong C10 REEV range is priced from R759 900 for the Style derivative and R799 900 for the Design range-topper. Pricing includes a five-year/100 000km vehicle warranty, an eight-year/150 000km battery warranty, and a service plan covering five years or 100 000km.

Features and equipment

The Style derivative features LED headlamps with daytime-running lights, 18-inch alloy wheels, 10.25-inch digital instrumentation, 14.6-inch touchscreen infotainment, 15W wireless smartphone charging, a 12-speaker sound system, dual-zone climate control, and a 360-degree surround-view camera with park distance sensors.
