A UK-based automotive restoration garage, SLSHOP, has discovered a 1982 Mercedes-Benz 500SL with only 67km on the clock. Unlike most low-mileage ‘barn finds’, this 500SL has been kept in showroom condition by Mr Hough of Gnosall, Staffordshire. The vehicle has never been registered or driven on public roads since it rolled off the production line some 42 years ago.

Original condition preserved

The 500SL has remained unrestored, finished in its original Blue Green Metallic paint and fully equipped with every optional extra available in 1982. It is believed to be the only fully original, unrestored 500SL R107, other than those in the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart.

One careful owner

The one-owner vehicle was purchased on November 30, 1982 for £24 400 by Mr Hough, a successful watchmaker. Today, that would be over £87 000, or around R2m at the current rand-pound exchange rate. The vehicle was trailered to his home, where it was stored in a heated, dehumidified garage for 42 years. The owner made a hallmark Mercedes-Benz sterling silver badge for his 500SL, which is still proudly displayed on the vehicle.

Factory-fresh details

This example still boasts the original factory stickers, wax-based corrosion and anti-rust layer on the exhaust and engine, and the original sales papers from Carols of Wolverhampton, including the incomplete V55/5 registration forms.

Most powerful SL of its time

Launched in 1980, the 500SL is powered by a 5.0-litre V8, codenamed M117 E50, producing 177kW, making it the most powerful SL of its generation.

Future display

The 500SL will remain unregistered and unrestored in the care of SLSHOP at their headquarters in Warwickshire, where it will be displayed. It will also appear at Mercedes-Benz World for a limited time in partnership with Mercedes-Benz UK.
