Lepas L6 targets SA’s hottest SUV segment

The Chery sub-brand’s local line-up expands with the arrival of this flagship SUV, now open for pre-orders.

Following the South African debut of the L4 compact crossover in March, Lepas is preparing to expand its local line-up with the arrival of the larger L6 midsize SUV.

With pre-orders opening today (June 12), here’s what prospective buyers can expect from the SA-bound newcomer.

Although local pricing and specifications of the L6 are expected to be announced at launch, Lepas has confirmed that the L6 will be equipped with a 13.2-inch infotainment touchscreen, replete with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and an electric tailgate.

The L6 also will also be equipped with 22 advanced driver assistance systems and a 540-degree HD surround-view camera system. However, Car Magazine expects that some of these features will likely be model-dependent. Additionally, the L6 will ship with a 10-year/1m km transferable engine warranty.

Although the Lepas L6 is also available in plug-in hybrid and fully electric forms in some international markets, it will be introduced to SA with the same 108kW/285N.m 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine found in the mid- and top-spec L4 derivatives. The 1.5-litre unit will likely be exclusively available with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The L6 will join the Chery sub-brand’s local line-up as its flagship SUV, positioned above the L4 to compete with rivals such as the new Toyota RAV4, Volkswagen Tiguan, BYD Sealion 6 and PHEV-powered Geely E5 in the competitive midsize-SUV segment. The L8 flagship is expected to be launched by the end of this year, completing the firm’s SUV range.
