Ndidi Nzwana John (14), from Vanderbijlpark, recently trialled with two respected European clubs – AS Roma and Frosinone Calcio.

According to Sedibeng Ster, this marked a major milestone for the teen, who received recognition after dominating the scoresheet at the WSH Elite Cup South Africa 2025 at Camp Discovery in Dinokeng. During the event, Ndidi walked away with the Top Goal Scorer award.

The award elevated his reputation and marked him as a player with a fearless attacking instinct, leading to increased attention from European scouts.

Making an impression abroad

Despite the pressure of stepping into world-class facilities thousands of kilometres from home, the Flair Feet Stars FC defender showed the composure of a seasoned professional. His agent, Jorge Abong, says the youngster wasted no time announcing his arrival.

“Ndidi is an exceptional talent. The first training session at Roma was difficult because he had just arrived after a long flight and had to deal with jet lag and cold weather. But he adapted quickly and even scored goals during training, which impressed the coaches.”

Abong reveals that negotiations are now underway and expressed his excitement about his future and Ndidi’s future in Italy. For the young star himself, the experience was unforgettable, citing that he learned new skills, experienced a different culture, and enjoyed Italian cuisine.

Journey from striker to defender

Ndidi’s soccer journey began at just four, when he joined Panorama FC in Johannesburg as a striker. He was known simply as a goal-hungry youngster who loved the thrill of scoring. That dream seemed shattered when a coach moved him into defence.

“I loved scoring goals, so I was surprised and unhappy when my coach moved me to defence. I remember crying,” Ndidi recalls.

“But looking back now, I appreciate that decision because it made me a smarter and more versatile player.”

Last season, he also featured for Jomo Cosmos U13 in the Gauteng Development League, scoring two goals. His father and coach, Nnamdi John, believes his son’s journey is built on discipline, faith and relentless hard work.

“I am extremely proud of Ndidi. From a young age, he showed discipline and passion for the game. After team training, we often stay behind for extra sessions to work on defending, positioning, and fitness. Talent alone is not enough – you need humility and hard work.”
