Watch: Visually impaired cyclist makes a difference across SA
An athlete from Alberton finished a gruelling 1 400km cycle journey, using his disability to uplift and inspire others.
Gavin Richard Kilpatrick from Mayberry Park in Alberton on the East Rand is a visually impaired athlete who continues to inspire many through his dedication to sport and community work, reports Alberton Record.
He was born with Stargardt disease, an eye disease that causes vision loss.
Despite this, Gavin has built an impressive sporting career. He has taken part in blind cricket, tandem cycling, rowing, para triathlon, blind bowls, and competitive fishing.
He has also competed in major international events, including the Paralympic Games and the Commonwealth Games.
Gavin joined the Meals on Wheels charity cycling tour from Alberton to Cape Town. He and his team left Alberton on February 25, arrived in Kimberly on February 27 and completed their journey to Cape Town on March 6.
The team travelled about 1 400km over nine days, cycling between 160km and 180km each day.
They passed through towns including Klerksdorp, Kimberley, De Aar, Beaufort West, Montague and Oudtshoorn.
Along the route, they stopped at community centres, schools, hospices, and old age homes to donate food parcels and essential supplies to those in need.
Gavin also continues to achieve success in cycling, recently winning the blind category at both provincial and national championships.
He is passionate about promoting sport for people with disabilities, especially young athletes. He believes more opportunities are needed to help them get involved and grow in sport.

“Sports at an early age play a vital role in a child’s development. Activities like these help build skills needed for learning, including reading and writing,” says Gavin.
Through his journey, Gavin hopes to inspire others and encourage more people with disabilities to take part in sport. He is already considering joining the charity ride again next year.
