Bloemfontein athletes triumph at SA Beach Wrestling Championships

A trio of wrestlers secured several gold and silver medals at a national championship, despite being newcomers to the sport and training in sand pits.

Three young wrestlers from Bloemfontein made their mark on the national stage, bringing home multiple medals and proving the city’s wrestling legacy is alive and thriving at the South African Beach Wrestling Championships on March 28, reports Bloemfontein Courant.

Held at Jeffreys Bay in the Eastern Cape under the South African Wrestling Association and the Eastern Province Wrestling Association, this fast-paced and spectator-friendly sport was introduced to make wrestling more accessible and entertaining.

According to coach Danie Bloem this was the first time any wrestlers from the Sand du Plessis Amateur Stoeiklub entered this tournament.

Despite being newcomers, the Bloemfontein team produced remarkable results. Jan Daniel Marais won gold in the U8 division, Stiaan le Roux took U15 gold and U17 silver, while Ruwan van Niekerk earned silver in U15 and the presidents junior division, only losing to reigning national champions.

He explains that matches are held on sand and are highly competitive, with points awarded for pushing an opponent out of the ring or forcing them to touch the sand with their head, knees, or elbows.

“Because we do not have a beach here in Bloemfontein, we trained using sand pits at local schools to simulate the conditions. The boys adapted impressively to the new rules and environment,” he says.

Bloem says he was immensely proud of his team for the dedication and discipline they showed throughout the competition. “Given this legacy, I am extremely happy with our results. It proves that we are currently on the correct track and that we can achieve the results of past wrestlers in the Bloemfontein region.”

“They showed up on the day, showing real grit and determination. I would say that was their biggest key to success. They took all their techniques and showed everyone what they are capable of,” Bloem adds.

Looking forward, the club is preparing for the national Greco-Roman Championships at the end of next month, aiming to build on the momentum from their beach wrestling success and to prepare the young athletes for international competitions, including potential representation of South Africa.
