BITTEREINDER release their music video for KULKUNS ft. Chris Chameleon

“Dis kulkuns, meisie, hy’s ‘n woordesmous. Hy lag nou in sy mou in terwyl hy jou hart wegflous.” Today sees the release of a brand new music video from BITTEREINDER for their song, KULKUNS. The song and music video also features Chris Chameleon.

“Moody, Floating, Grey. A shameless illusion, held together with smoke, mirrors, chameleons and smooth talking. KULKUNS is about how we lie to each other and ourselves.”

BITTEREINDER chose a controlled environment to shoot the video in because of some of the lighting effects they wanted to achieve which would not have been possible with natural light. This video is unique in the sense that Louis opted for a slightly more slow-paced edit than any of the previous BITTEREINDER videos. He felt the performances were so strong that he did not want to interrupt any of the main shots with cutaways or choppy editing.

“The KULKUNS video shoot itself was so smooth; there were zero hiccups, just classy performances from everyone involved behind and in front of the camera, and I think that translates well into the final edit Louis did too. Working with Chris was inspirational, he is a true kulkunstenaar.” says Jaco.

The song itself is about lying with a straight face. It’s about hip-hop. It’s about bluffing on a rubbish hand and being eaten alive. It’s an anti-love song. Every human being that has been lied to or has lied, to themselves or others, can sing KULKUNS and identify with the song. The lively shadows, dominant grays and sharply contrasting focal ranges of the video link directly to the idea of an illusionist plying his/her trade.

– Chris Chameleon.

Q & A with BITTEREINDER:

R: First of all, congratulations on the new track that’s just in time for Christmas and for all your avid fans.

B: Thank you! It’s for our regular fans too…

R: You sing about past journeys in Kulkuns, what was the inspiration behind the song?

B: The last stanza of the song basically sums up its message: “ai meisiekind, as jy maar net vir jouself kon dink” etc. The song is about being lied to, about believing illusions, about sleight of hand and about love. Some of the things Jakkals claims to have done in his rap verse are true.

R: Why did you decide to use Chris Chameleon for this specific collab?

B: Chris is the ultimate illusionist. His whole persona is pretty much the embodiment of a “kulkunstenaar”. His musical and writing endeavours have been inspiring us since we were in high school.

R: Any Bittereinder shows the fans can look forward to in December?

B: We are playing at the Smoking Dragon Festival in the Drakensberg for New Years, think it’s gonna be magical.

R: Will you be spending Christmas with your families in Pretoria or do you have anything else up your sleeve?

B: Louis will be in the Far East, Jaco will be in hiding, Peach will be climbing down chimneys delivering compact discs with music on them.

R: Your Christmas messages to your fans?
