Vaal football stars pursue European dreams
Two young footballers from the Vaal region are following in the footsteps of local legends as they embark on new careers with European clubs.
Vaal football stars Relebohile Mofokeng and Elias Mokwana are living their childhood dreams of playing in Europe, reports Sedibeng Ster.
The duo were part of the Bafana Bafana team that featured at the 2026 Fifa World Cup, securing European moves following their performances on the international stage.
Mofokeng joined Belgian club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise shortly after South Africa’s tournament campaign ended. Meanwhile, Mokwana completed a transfer to Danish side FC Copenhagen following a loan spell at AEL Limassol from Mamelodi Sundowns.
Local legends inspire next generation
In an interview with Sedibeng Ster Sport at a send-off dinner hosted by Emfuleni Local Municipality Mayor Hassan Mako, the players expressed their desire to emulate past stars from the area.
Former Bafana Bafana captain Aaron Mokoena and Augustine Makalakalane both spent over a decade competing in top European leagues before returning to South Africa.
While Mofokeng has already begun settling into his new surroundings in Belgium, Mokwana is preparing to make his debut in Denmark.
