An innovative solution for matric farewells in the time of Covid-19

A matric farewell is a rite of passage to many young people, but the Covid-19 pandemic has seemingly made it impossible for the class of 2020 to wrap up the year with traditional celebrations.

However, a group of events specialists have come up with a creative solution that will see a group of matriculants win a matric farewell experience that is safe, fun, and unique.

Nadine Botha, co-owner of Backdrop Events, came up with the brilliant idea of a matric farewell drive-by.

“You look forward to your matric farewell throughout your high school years,” she explains.

“It marks the end of your school years, closing a chapter on your childhood years before you open a new one where your life as an adult starts.”

The concept is simple, but glamorously ingenious.

One matriculant will win a dream farewell at their home with an outfit for the special evening, makeup, hair, and nails.

The winner can then invite five friends and their partners to join them for the special drive-by event where a photographer will be taking photos to capture their special moments with music by a popular DJ to dance to.

For this occasion Backdrop Events is partnering with designer Liezl Nortje from Fantasia; make-up artist, nail and hair artist Yolanda Small from Taureen Artistry and services; photographer Mareli Victor from Mareli Victor Photography; deejaying will be done by musician Dewald Steyn from Dewald Steyn Musiek; Balloons by Balloon Design Academy; paper art by Paper Republic; cakes by Cakes by Kalay; and Coquis men’s clothing.

The lighting for the wondrous evening will be supplied by Erné Joubert from Lampyridae Lights.

“With Covid-19 threatening life as we once knew it, it’s irresponsible to think that an event with 500+ people can be held safely, so we came up with an idea that allows matriculants to celebrate their special day safely in small groups,” says Botha.

The competitions is open to all 2020 matriculants in Gauteng.
