Meet the Principal

Alan Redfern is the 16th headmaster of Maritzburg College, bringing 27 years of experience in South African education, including two decades in boys’ boarding education. A lifelong educator, he is passionate about boys’ education grounded in strong Christian values and principles.

His career includes leadership roles at Michaelhouse, St David’s Marist Inanda, St Andrew’s College and Stanford Lake College. His teaching career began at Maritzburg College, where he taught biology and physical education.

Redfern believes passionately in values-based, holistic education that balances academic, sporting and cultural excellence with character development and emotional well-being. His focus is on developing ethical, confident young men equipped to lead, serve and contribute meaningfully to South Africa’s future.

He is married to Dionne, headmistress of Epworth School, and they have two adult children, Megan and David.
