The Drakensberg Boys Choir School’s (DBCS) mission is to prepare boys for life and leadership through excellence in music, academics, sport and social enrichment in a Christian environment.

The school builds character and develops boys to harness the gift of music to bring hope and positive change to South Africa and beyond.

DBCS offers a unique, complete and diverse schooling experience designed to make a lasting impact on every Drakie boy who becomes part of this centre of excellence. DBCS builds resilience, develops relationships and fosters global ambassadors, with music as a tool for God’s glory. DBCS is a values-driven middle school that promotes strong character and academic excellence from Grade Four to Grade Nine. It serves as a feeder for high schools, promoting music and academic careers.

The Drakensberg Boys Choir is a national asset known for its exceptional musical talent. The choir has a diverse repertoire, ranging from classical choral and African music to Afro-pop, representing the best of South Africa. It is the only established choir school in South Africa with a solid global reputation built over its rich 59-year history. The boys are accomplished musicians and perform weekly in the well-equipped Ken MacKenzie Auditorium.

Boys between the ages of nine and 13 can apply to join DBCS. Parents interested in applying can contact marketing@dbchoir.com to arrange a voice audition, which is the first step in the process.

This is followed by an academic assessment to determine whether the prospective pupil can follow the academic programme in English, the school’s language of learning. After completing these steps, DBCS invites the prospective pupil and his parents to an online interview with the headmaster and director of music. This is the final step in the process of becoming a Drakie.

Meet the Principal

From dreams of becoming a detective at age 10 to a career in education – with a restaurant venture along the way – Hendrik Bekker’s path to the principal’s office has been anything but ordinary.

With more than three decades in public and independent education, Bekker has served as a teacher, head of department, principal and executive head. Since 2024, he has led the Drakensberg Boys Choir School, championing a holistic education that balances academics, sport, the arts and service.

Away from school, Bekker is a keen self-taught cook whose passion once led him to own and run a restaurant. Had education not called, forensic science or hotel management might have.

His pupils have also taught him an enduring lesson: never judge a book by its cover.

“I have learned the value of taking the time to listen, understand, and get to know someone before forming an opinion. Every pupil has a unique story and something valuable to contribute.”
