Cupcakes for Cancer
The nationwide Cupcakes of Hope initiative to raise funds for children with cancer was supported in Ballito at the Lifestyle centre on Saturday and was a sell-out success.
Despite the rain, there was a great turn out and a lively atmosphere, not to mention some dropped jaws when 1500 cupcakes, all brightly coloured and creatively decorated, went on display.
Lewaine von Alleman, co-ordinator of the Ballito event, when asked if the event was a success, said, “Oh absolutely! We sold out by two o’clock, the support was phenomenal.”
To add to the mix, there was a celebrity cupcake icing competition, in which personalities went against the clock icing cupcakes the size of coconuts, donated by Lifestyle Centre, to see who could impress the crowd the most. Penelope Kirkland from Redcap Radio, East Coast Radio’s Deon Govender, television personality Margaret van der Westhuizen, South African and African Aerobic Gymnastics Champion Dominic Mann, professional swimmers Charl van Zyl and Alain Tardin all took part.
The crowd was indecisive as to the victor so there was no ultimate victor to the competition.
Red Cap Radio’s David Yapp, the event’s MC, got the crowd fully involved with no small amount of humour.
All in all, the initiative was a smashing success, nationally raising over R1,1 million for cancer in 40 malls around the country.
When the day was done, children from the Rose Zwane orphanage came around with big grins for some free cupcakes.
