Cyclists gear up for the deaf
Cyclists hit the track in aid of people suffering from deafness.
Gravel and dirt flew on Sunday as hundreds of cyclists took off for the third annual Gears for Ears mountain bike challenge at Holla Trails, Compensation.
The race, which raises funds for people suffering with hearing disabilities, saw around 600 participants, more than triple the number of riders since the first event in 2011.
“It was a fantastic event. It was really well supported, the bad weather held off and the turnout was superb,” said Gears for Ears director Alan Hook.
Hook himself was once deaf, but his life changed after having a cochlear implant operation and he said Gears for Ears aims to bring the same miracle to others suffering from deafness.
Having been thoroughly enjoyed by riders, Gears for Ears promises to grow from strength to strength.
The winners of the men’s 50km race were Ballito men Tyrone White, Joshua Nelson and John Ntuli, coming in at first, second and third place respectively.
The ladies 50km winners were Jeannie Bomford from Stellenbosch in first place, Ballito’s champ Natalie Bergstrom in second place and Frankie du Toit from Wartburg third.
