Over a thousand senior citizens gathered at Tongaat town hall to witness the crowning of this year’s gracious grandma and grandpa on Wednesday, October 30.
The competition was hosted by the association of senior citizens of Tongaat (Ascot), which has over a dozen clubs in the area.
Dressed in their finest, participants strutted their stuff on stage and clearly showed that age was no issue for them. Head judge Vigie Padayachee said seniors had more confidence and grace than younger people, which made the competition difficult to judge.
Newton’s Agripa Ndlovu and Thandi Mzobe of Hambanathi were victorious and took home the title. Ndlovu said this clearly showed that even at their old age they still “had the spunk and attitude to impress the judges”.
Ascot chairman Rajan Chengadu congratulated the winners and thanked Durban businessman Boyce Naidoo for sponsoring the event.
