Tribute and joy at Litchi Concert
A live proposal, a tribute to Mandela and great live music.
The concert held at the Litchi Orchard last Friday evening was far from a regular gig.
Great live music was interspersed with commemoration for late hero Nelson Mandela, which saw daughter of Albert Luthuli, Dr Albertina Luthuli, give tribute to Madiba’s passing.
“South Africa is the most beautiful country in the world,” she said, to raucous applause, “let baba Mandela’s death unite South Africans, so that we can all enjoy this beautiful country together.”
After the tribute, reverend Siphiwe Mkize, from the United Congregational Church in Groutville, said a prayer in honour of Mandela’s passing, following which the gathered crowd rose and sang the national anthem.
As if the night was not emotionally charged enough, a man named Paul Esteves got on one knee after he’d finished playing a song and proposed to his now-fiancé, Andrea McMurry, who accepted to the delight of touched onlookers.
A warm atmosphere, delicious food and a variety of music made the evening all the more memorable, and fans were drawn onto the grass to dance, despite the rain, when the last act of Crash Car Burn took the stage.
According to event organisers, there were about a thousand people in attendance despite the weather.
