It’s looong, it’s hot – it’s the world’s longest bunny chow!

Sasol Salt Rock beat their 2012 record for longest bunny chow in the world, measuring in at 8,10 metres

A group of specially-trained elves set a new world record last week – by producing the longest bunny chow ever made.

The elves, imported from the North Pole, had to undergo special heat training before they attempted to cook the tastiest loaf of bread and curry this side of Stanger.

When the temperature starts heading for the 30 degree mark, most KwaZulu-Natal natives head straight for the nearest curry den.

A quarter of whatever your curry preference – it is usually mutton – and an ice cold Coke screams proudly KZN. Even if you are not from around here, it is scandalous not to gorge on a bunny chow when the weather dictates.

Sasol Salt Rock celebrated their first birthday on Friday by giving the North Coast not just a quarter, but a whopping 10 metres of spicy mutton bunny chow.

Sasol beat their 2012 record for longest bunny chow in the world, measuring in at 8,10 metres.

This year’s loaf was again baked by Premier Foods using a special 10m baking pan to pop out a single, unbroken loaf.

“We baked it in Pinetown and used a special truck to drive it to Salt Rock. We could not risk it breaking. We used 24kg of flour, 14l of water and one litre of yeast,” said Premier Foods elf Jurie Botha.

Sasol Salt Rock forecourt manager Praveena Thulkanum helped chief elf cook Saris Padayachee soak the bread with Padayachee’s famous mutton curry.

“We wanted to bring the community together to share in our birthday and of course, taste our divine curry,” said Thulkanum.

As part of the celebrations Sasol invited nearby children’s homes for a party with jumping castles, cake, Tigger and Winnie The Pooh.

The only requirement to get a piece of the record-breaking bunny chow was to buy a toy for an underprivileged child, which will be handed to East Coast Radio Toy Story.

Luke Comins and Marc Forrest, who review bunny chows in and around Durban, gave the bunny chow a gold star.
