Seeking spiritual balance

Lord Muruga devotees came out in numbers to celebrate Kavady.

Over 1000 Lord Muruga devotees braved yesterday’s heat when  they participated in the annual Kavady festival at Wewe Dam in Tongaat.

The festival was hosted by the Sandfields Siva Subramaniar Temple.

The Kavady festival is observed over 10 days, during which they abstain from sex and drugs and maintain a vegetarian diet. Carrying a Kavady is way of showing devotion to Lord Muruga.

Prior to the event devotees participated in a number of build up activities such as the raising of the flag which marked the beginning of the 10 day fast. The flag has a symbol of a rooster which represents the dawn of knowledge which will destroy ignorance during and after the festival.

Devotees wear yellow during Kavady because when the festival first started in India they worshipped the sun. They recognised the sun as Lord Muruga and believed it could burn up their sins and redeem them.
