Artisan butcher ready to open doors at new Ballito mall

Taylor's Meats and More will be opening at the new Ballito Junction Regional Mall this March

Growing up on a farm in Underberg in a cattle farming family, it’s no surprise that Ballito resident Warwick Taylor (Woza) made a successful career in the meat industry.

Now ready to open the doors to his artisan butchery, Taylor’s Meats and More at the Ballito Junction Regional Mall, Woza has come a long way since the start of his adventure.

“As a teenager I was often on the hills or in the fields amongst the cows, counting the calves, checking their health or adding feed to the feed troughs,” said Woza.

After school he enrolled for his compulsory two years military training but soon decided the army was not for him.

“When I had nothing to do and all day to do it in, I knew that the army for me was going to be a very long two years, so I decided to take action – I needed a job!”

Woza was offered a part-time job at Cecil Glasson Butchery and after completing his military service, was hired full-time.

“It was during my time at Glassons that I really learnt how to be a butcher.

“Even at my young age I was professional, I was driven to deliver excellence and my customers loved me.”

In 1989 he became a qualified meat technician (blockman) by successfully completing a grade 1 meat diploma.

In 1997 Woza was given the opportunity to join the Pick ‘n Pay franchise in Victoria Road, Pietermaritzburg, as the new owners were wanting to out-source their butchery department.

After owning and running the butchery for 15 years, he then made the bold move to relocate to Ballito where he bought the butchery business at Pick ‘n Pay Ballito.

“In November 2014 I was seconded to the Pick ‘n Pay Corporate Group as head of butcheries KZN.

“This appointment was an honour and a privilege to me and I was especially excited at the prospect of being responsible for the groups 38 butcheries.”

However, last year Woza resigned from his position and began the search for the next chapter of his working life.

He was soon offered a premises in the new Ballito Junction Regional Mall and is busy with the planning stages of his artisan butchery.

“We look forward to opening our doors on 23 March.”
