One of these producers is Greenfields free range beef which is born and bred in the Lowlands Valley situated in Estcourt, Mooi River.
“The farm started in 1893 and today is farmed by fourth generation brothers, Vaughan and Hamish Skead,” said Taylor.
“The herd is home to around 6000 breeding cows and their offspring ensuring Taylors Meats with a consistent supply of quality free range beef all year round.”
The Lowlands beef herd is made up of Symons, Hereford, Bovelder and Bonsmara cattle, cross bred to ensure hardy well adapted animals that will survive the harsh Mooi River winters and produce the best quality beef.

“The cattle graze in camps/pastures and are rotated regularly, between camps and differing veld types to allow the grass to recover and to produce uniform cuts of beef all year round.
“In harsh conditions hay is provided with the normal licks to ensure the cattle receive enough natural sources of energy and protein at all times.”
Animal health
The Lowlands farming team believe that animal health begins with the staff.
“Most of the staff were born on the farms and are third and fourth generation cattleman.
“The staff are allowed to run their own cattle together with those of Lowlands farming and are treated exactly the same ensuring the best attention and care at all times resulting in the best cut of Greenfields beef possible.”
Traceability
At birth all calves receive their ID numbers in the form of ear tags which they keep for life ensuring traceability.

Greenfields protocol
In order for beef to be sold as Greenfields Free Range Beef the following protocol is followed:
- The animals must be able to range freely over large camps/pastures with unlimited access to grass and fresh water at all times.
- The animals are grass-fed. In harsh circumstances supplementation is necessary but this supplementation is naturally concerved hay or silage. Grain may not exceed 5% of the total dry matter intake over the lifetime of the animal.
- No animal by-products are allowed
- No growth hormones, steroids or stimulants are allowed
- Greenfields beef adheres to the four pillars of free-range ethics:
- Free access to food and fresh water in large camps/pastures.
- Freedom from sickness and disease
- Freedom from pain and suffering
- Freedom to express natural bovine behaviour.
