Ballito Moja carts initiative uplifts informal traders
Informal traders sell anything from fruit, cake, sweets and cold drinks and everything in-between to support themselves and their families.
Two years on, the Ballito Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) and KwaDukuza Municipality’s Moja Carts initiative has gone from strength to strength.
There are now six of these eye-catching carts located in strategic points in the precinct.
The informal sector forms a significant part of life in South Africa and is often viewed as the backbone of job creation.
“We recognise the important role our traders play in our community, which is why we wanted to create a safe space where they could sell their products,” said Ballito UIP precinct manager, Thierry Leclezio.
The South African slang word ‘moja’ means something of value, and the Moja Carts aim to do exactly that – add value by uplifting the precinct’s informal street traders by providing them with a safe, secure, and clean place to sell their goods.
The Ballito UIP maintains the six carts to ensure they do not rust and fall into disrepair, recently upgrading the current carts’ tyres.
“We hope to introduce three more carts in the near future and are also looking at developing a different type of cart for traders located in the boardwalk area. Watch this space!” said Leclezio.
