Opened in November last year, Grandezza Leather Co has spent more than two years creating a unique collection of leather products which range from wallets, handbags and backpacks to jackets and more.

Owner Dave Blundell said he hand-picked his team needed for the high-end leather manufacturing operation. He himself began working as a sewing machine technician manufacturing leather seats for Mercedes-Benz and other automotive brands.

Supported by Andre Gerber who has spent more than 40 years in fashion and design, the duo are producing supreme leather products right here in Ballito.

Dave emphasised they hand-pick their leather which is sourced locally, which includes crocodile, ostrich, bovine, sheep nappa and suedes in various colours and animal prints.

“Our fittings – nickel and antique brass – are sourced from top fashion suppliers in Italy who also supply major companies such as Gucci and Louis Vuitton.”

“We also do custom projects and can make anything a client wants – except spacesuits,” Andre joked, adding there was very little they could not do.

Custom-made projects have a seven to 10 day lead-time depending on the intricacy of the project, and Grandezza helps with bringing clients’ leather products back to life, often offering to improve on them. Upholstery services are also offered.

“The brand we are busy creating and developing here is one which constantly challenges the norm of what can be done with leather. We want people to come in and see our creativity,” said Dave.

The company is also exploring export opportunities to countries such as Spain, the United Arab Emirates and Australia.

While one would expect to pay premium prices for the exquisite and high quality products on offer at Grandezza, the fact that they operate as a factory shop allows them to be competitive without sacrificing on quality.

Their leathers are carefully tanned by reputable tanneries with the goal of protecting the environment.
