Pilot traffic light project streamlines traffic

A sense of calm can be felt with the uninterrupted movement of commuters within the precinct throughout the day.

The Ballito Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP), in collaboration with KwaDukuza municipality’s (KDM) electrical department, piloted the first back-up power solution for traffic lights in Ballito central on March 23.

Since then, an additional three backup inverters have been installed, completing the first pilot project of its kind in KwaZulu-Natal.

“It’s a great relief to see traffic congestion alleviated in our precinct with ongoing loadshedding, with all four major intersections working effectively 24/7. Following best practice, our learnings from the first installation in March proved its worth, guiding decision making to ensure obstacles were dealt with proactively,” said Ballito UIP precinct manager, Thierry Leclezio.

Outside of the first installation at the P445 and McDonalds, inverters have also been installed at the P445 and Nandos/Shell intersection, the P445 and the M4, and the M4 at Ashton/Engen.

A sense of calm can be felt with the uninterrupted movement of commuters within the precinct throughout the day, with the added improvement of safety for pedestrians.

“As part of our commitment to position Ballito as a sought-after precinct and enhance investment attractiveness of the North Coast, the success and learnings of this pilot project will be shared with neighbouring precincts,” said Thierry.

“Collaboration with municipalities is key in establishing the growth trajectory of the North Coast, building investor confidence and at the same time maintaining and improving the quality of life for all.”
