Battle damp and mould with Ballito’s eco-friendly HumidityHulk

Ballito entrepreneurs' creative product keeps homes fresh and dry.

A Ballito-made solution to fight excess moisture and mould in your home is now available on your doorstep.

Ballito entrepreneurs Lorraine Fleetwood and Claire Butler have developed HumidityHulk, a powerful eco-friendly absorber that fights humidity in spaces where damp is problematic.

These are spaces such as cupboards, garages, bathrooms and closets.

The idea to start HumidityHulk arose in 2023 when the two women moved to the North Coast and were challenged by the damp and mould that come with coastal living.

“We did a lot of research and development and then months of clinical trials with various options for the substrate and container we now use,” said Butler.

Fleetwood and Butler bring a wealth of expertise to their business. Fleetwood, who has a background in the medical industry and an entrepreneurial flair, oversees operations, while Butler, a marketing professional with over two decades of experience, drives HumidityHulk’s brand growth.

The pair bagged an impressive second place in the 2024 Entrepreneur competition hosted by the iLembe Chamber of Commerce.

Butler said being part of the competition helped them come up with a solid business plan to continue growing their business.

“The programme pushed me to review aspects of my business that I hadn’t considered before. The highlight? I now have a solid business plan – a clear roadmap with actionable steps and achievable goals,” said Butler.

HumidityHulk has already diversified its products.

“The garage is our latest edition as we received many requests for a larger variant and also know that garages can be very musty in coastal towns,” she said.

HumidityHulk’s approach is simple but effective. Its non-toxic formula lasts three to six months and is safe for homes and pets alike, making it ideal for households looking for an environmentally conscious choice.

When placed in the desired area, its contents draw moisture, collecting water in the container that must be emptied when necessary.

With biodegradable refill options, HumidityHulk aligns with sustainable practices, helping to reduce plastic waste while keeping spaces mould-free.

“We feel strongly about not putting more plastic into our world and that’s why we offer the biodegradable refill pack,” said Butler.

HumidityHulk is now available on Takealot and at Mica Ballito.
