Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery is the future of treatment according to Ballito ophthalmologist, Dr Jugadoe
The relatively new surgical method is safer, less traumatic and sees fewer complications than traditional treatment options
The rise in Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) has made a massive difference in the treatment of the condition.
As a relatively new treatment option, MIGS offers a less invasive approach than traditional glaucoma surgery. It is usually recommended once first line treatment options like laser trabeculoplasty or topical eye drops have been exhausted.
MIGS procedures typically involve tiny incisions and microscopic devices or implants to improve fluid drainage in the eye, thereby reducing intraocular pressure. These procedures are often performed at the same time as cataract surgery but can also be done as a standalone treatment.
One of the local proponents of MIGS is Ballito-based ophthalmologist, Dr Bhavna Jugadoe, who has experience with the treatment.
“Some common MIGS procedures include Goniotomy with Kahook’s Dual blade, Trabectome or bent needle, iStent, Xen Implant and Preserflo microshunt,” said Dr Jugadoe.
“MIGS offers several advantages over traditional glaucoma surgeries, including a high safety profile, less trauma to the eye, faster recovery times, fewer complications and the fact that patients often do not require long-term use of eye drops.”
MIGS has allowed for improved management of patients with mild to moderate glaucoma and may be useful in patients with poor tolerance to medication or where more intraocular pressure lowering is required than just drops or laser.
“If you are considering MIGS, it’s essential to consult with an ophthalmologist to determine the best course of treatment for you,” she said.
The perfect opportunity to get an expert consultation is to visit Dr Jugadoe on World Glaucoma Awareness Day on Friday, March 14. She is offering free glaucoma screenings on the day at Ribumed Day Hospital in Ballito.
